This tutorial video demonstrates a high-velocity impact simulation using Abaqus. A steel projectile strikes a ceramic plate reinforced with a steel backing. Both the projectile and the steel plate are modeled as deformable parts. For these components, a ductile material model with shear damage and damage evolution is applied.
The ceramic (silicon) plate uses a ductile damage model with evolution, combined with Drucker–Prager plasticity and hardening. The fracture zone is defined using the Us–Up equation of state. A dynamic explicit procedure is used, which is suitable for high-speed impact analyses.
Boundary conditions are applied to fix the plates, and the projectile is given an initial velocity in the Load module. Mesh quality in the impact zone significantly affects the accuracy of the results.
