In this tutorial, a step-by-step simulation of embankment construction on a saturated soil floor is carried out using Abaqus. The figure below shows the schematic of the simulation.
The soil model is divided into two sections: a dry section and a saturated section. The soil is defined as an elastic material with Coulomb-Mohr plasticity. For the saturated soil, permeability is specified in the material properties.
The analysis consists of seven steps:
Step 1: Application of soil body force.
Steps 2–6: Sequential construction of the embankment.
Step 7: Rest period applied to all parts of the soil for a long duration.
During construction, stresses in the soil increase. Afterward, pore pressure decreases as the soil gradually dries and loses moisture. Figures of the simulation results are shown below.
