In this tutorial, an earthquake load is applied to a water-filled tank to study the sloshing phenomenon using Abaqus. Both the tank and the water are modeled as three-dimensional deformable parts. The concrete tank is defined with elastic–plastic material properties, while the water is modeled with viscosity using the Us–Up equation.
The earthquake load is introduced through a dynamic explicit step with a duration of 55 seconds. To capture the sloshing behavior of the water, a Lagrangian approach is implemented. During the simulation, the water begins to slosh, and the resulting waves collide with the tank walls, generating stresses in the structure.
