Workshop: Simulation Cyclic Loading Over Steel Beam Column Structure Reinforced With Cfrp In Abaqus

In this tutorial, cyclic loading of a steel beam–column structure reinforced with CFRP has been simulated in Abaqus.

  • The steel beam and column are modeled as three-dimensional shell parts.
  • The CFRP plates are modeled as planar shell parts.
  • Steel behavior under cyclic loading is defined using the Combined Plasticity model, which can predict material response at each cycle.
  • CFRP material properties are defined using engineering constants elasticity together with Hashin’s damage criterion.
  • A general static step is applied, with adjustments made to the convergence settings.
  • Perfect contact is assumed between the steel beam and column, as well as between the steel beam and CFRP sheets.
  • Boundary conditions: the top and bottom ends of the steel column are fixed. A displacement with amplitude, following a loading protocol, is applied at the end of the steel beam.
  • A fine mesh is used to improve accuracy of the results.

After the analysis, results such as stress, strain, displacement, and hysteresis diagrams can be obtained. Figures of the assembled parts and simulation results are shown below.
