In this tutorial, we present a step-by-step simulation of a bird strike in Abaqus. During the analysis, the bird collides with the windshield. To model the bird’s behavior, we use the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formulation.

There are two ways to create an SPH procedure in Abaqus:

The first method is through Abaqus/CAE, but this approach can be tricky.

The second method involves editing the input file. In this case, we changed the element type from C3D8R to PC3D and applied additional modifications for the interaction setup.

For the windshield, we used an elastic material model. For the bird, the Us–Up equation of state was applied. Figures of the simulation results are shown below.
