In this tutorial, an air blast explosion inside a reinforced concrete room is simulated using Abaqus. The concrete room is modeled as a three-dimensional part with the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) material to predict both compressive and tensile damage. Reinforcement is represented as beam elements, modeled with wire elements and steel material properties.
A dynamic explicit procedure is applied, which is suitable for this type of high-speed analysis. The air blast phenomenon is modeled using the CONWEP approach. During the simulation, the concrete room and reinforcement beams experience very high pressure, resulting in significant tensile and compressive damage.
