In this tutorial, the prediction model of penetration depth for alumina ceramics under garnet impact in Abaqus is studied. The target and projectile were modeled as three-dimensional parts.

The JH-2 constitutive model was used to describe the response of ceramic materials under high strain rates. This model requires several material constants to fully define the behavior of a specific ceramic.

The target dimensions were 1000 × 400 × 400 μm³. Boundary conditions were applied as follows: nodes on the top face impacted by the particle were left free, while nodes on the other five exterior faces were fixed.

A refined mesh was applied near the impact zone, while a coarser mesh was used farther away. The abrasive particle was modeled as a sphere using rigid 3D solid (tetrahedral) elements. A figure of the assembled part is shown below.

A dynamic explicit procedure was chosen as appropriate for this type of analysis. The garnet particle was assigned an initial velocity of 700 m/s. After impact, the damage variable became visible, and the garnet penetrated into the target. Figures of the simulation results are provided below.
