In this tutorial, the effect of earthquake loading on a gravity dam interacting with water and soil is simulated. All components are modeled in two dimensions. The dam is defined using the Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) material model, the soil is represented with the Mohr-Coulomb model, and the water is modeled acoustically using its Bulk Modulus.
To capture boundary effects, infinite elements are applied to the soil far from the foundation. A dynamic implicit step is chosen as appropriate for this type of analysis. The simulation runs for 10 seconds, with earthquake acceleration applied at the depth of the soil. Figures of the simulation results are shown below.
