In this tutorial, the crack growth simulation of bone under three-point bending in Abaqus is studied. Structural analysis of bones is an active research area, where the finite element method (FEM) is widely used to better understand the mechanisms of bone fractures.Most previous studies focused only on stress or strain distribution patterns. They did not show how a fracture initiates, propagates, or how a crack line grows. Bones can fracture in different ways. For example, a break that does not damage surrounding tissue or penetrate the skin is called a closed fracture. In contrast, a fracture that damages surrounding tissue and breaks through the skin is known as a compound fracture or open fracture. Compound fractures are generally more serious because they are exposed and often infected.In this simulation, the bone is modeled as a two-dimensional part with elastic material properties. Crack growth is defined using a traction–separation law. A static analysis combined with the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is applied, which is appropriate for this type of fracture study. Figures of the simulation results are shown below.
