In this tutorial, bolt failure in a steel beam-to-column connection is simulated using Abaqus. The bolts, beam, and column are modeled as three-dimensional solid parts. A figure of the assembled structure is provided below.

Steel structures consist of various members such as beams, columns, and plates that must be securely connected. The goal of connection design is to create joints that are safe, economical, and simple. It is also important to standardize connections and detail them to allow for clearance, adjustment, corrosion resistance, ease of maintenance, and good appearance.

To simulate bolt and column failure, steel is modeled as an elastic-plastic material with ductile and shear damage criteria. A dynamic explicit step is used due to the large deformations involved, which cannot be handled by a standard static solver.

Surface-to-surface interactions are defined between all parts. Contact properties include a friction coefficient and hard contact behavior. The column is fixed at one end, and a displacement load is applied to the beam using a smooth step amplitude.

Proper meshing is essential. Multiple partitions are created in each part to generate a high-quality mesh. After running the simulation, results such as stress, strain, damage, and failure are available for analysis.

The beam moves along the Z-direction, causing significant damage to the bolts. As a result, several bolts fail and detach from the structure.
