Buried pipelines are critical lifelines for the distribution of water, gas, and oil. However, pressurized gas pipelines can be endangered by accidental explosions in process industries, explosives factories, open-pit mines, quarries, and public works. They may also be threatened by intentional explosions near the pipeline. In recent years, multiple explosions along oil and gas transmission routes have shown that terrorist attacks and sabotage have unfortunately increased.
In this tutorial, a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) explosion is modeled. A fully coupled 3D finite element model is developed using the combined Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The simplified Johnson-Cook material model is applied to represent the pipe material behavior. The JWL equation of state is used for charge detonation, and the ideal gas equation of state is employed for air modeling.
Additionally, the soil mass behavior is modeled using Coulomb-Mohr plasticity. Figures of the simulation results are provided below.
