In this tutorial, the simulation of an air blast explosion on a reinforced concrete (RC) beam with Banana-Epoxy lamina in Abaqus is presented.

The concrete beam is modeled as a three-dimensional solid part.

The reinforcing bars and strips are modeled as three-dimensional wire parts.

The Banana-Epoxy lamina is modeled as a three-dimensional shell with eight layers.

To represent concrete behavior under severe compression loads, such as high-velocity impacts or blast explosions, Abaqus provides several suitable material models. Custom material models can also be defined using user subroutines or input file capabilities.

For the Banana-Epoxy material, the elasticity–engineering constants option is selected. Eight conventional shell layers with different fiber orientations are used. For the bars and strips, steel material with elastic–plastic behavior is applied.

The analysis is performed using a dynamic explicit step, which is appropriate for blast simulations. Steel reinforcements are defined as embedded regions inside the concrete host. The contact between the concrete beam and the Banana-Epoxy lamina is assumed to be perfect. Fixed boundary conditions are applied at both ends of the beam. A fine mesh is required to obtain accurate results.

After the simulation, results such as stress, strain, damage variables, failure modes, force–displacement diagrams, and more are available. Figures of the results are shown below.
