Arc welding is a fusion process used to join metals. Intense heat is applied at the joint between two parts, causing the metal to melt and intermix. This can occur directly or with the help of a molten filler metal. After cooling and solidification, a metallurgical bond is formed. Because the joint is an intermixture of metals, the final weld can achieve strength properties similar to those of the base materials.
This is different from non-fusion joining methods such as soldering or brazing, where the mechanical and physical properties of the base materials cannot be fully reproduced at the joint.
In this tutorial, steel pipes are used as the base material. A DFLUX subroutine is applied to create a non-uniform heat distribution during the welding process. All material properties are defined as temperature-dependent. For the analysis, a Displacement–Temperature coupled step is used to simulate the welding process. Figures of the simulation results are shown below.
