In this tutorial, the impact of soil on a metal plate is simulated in Abaqus using the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The soil is modeled as a three‑dimensional part with elastic–plastic behavior and an SPH formulation. Coulomb–Mohr plasticity is applied to represent the soil material.
To define particle elements, the input file is edited to convert continuum elements into particle elements. During the explicit dynamic analysis, the soil impacts the metal plate and causes noticeable deformation. After the impact, the soil particles separate from each other, showing the characteristic behavior of SPH materials.
