Offshore pipelines are often exposed to accidental impact loads, such as those caused by anchors or trawl gear. Several parameters affect the response of the pipeline, including pipe geometry, material properties, internal contents, and impact velocity.
This tutorial presents an impact simulation of water-filled X65 steel pipes using Abaqus. The analysis applies the SPH (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics) method within an explicit dynamic procedure, which is well-suited for modeling high-speed impact events.
During the impact, the pipe undergoes bending, which forces water to escape from its interior. The simulation captures this fluid-structure interaction effectively.
Below are some figures illustrating the simulation results.
